In 1937, during the Great Depression, Dr. Elizabeth Hohl founded the Physicians Aid Association to help physicians in need. Since that time, hundreds of physicians, physicians in training and their families in Los Angeles County have been aided with housing, living expenses and more through PAA’s benevolent giving program.
Although originating from the Great Depression, the PAA continues to help physicians and physicians-in-training face challenges. From the COVID-19 Pandemic to the 2025 fires that decimated parts of Los Angeles, the PAA continues to help our colleagues through difficult times.
The PAA fills a crucial niche by aiding physicians during temporary but acute financial distress, preventing hardship from compromising their career or well-being
Since its founding during the Great Depression by Dr. Elizabeth Hohl, PAA has assisted several hundreds of professionals and their families across L.A. County.
If you’re a physician or physician-in-training in Los Angeles County experiencing short‑term financial trouble, PAA may be able to provide an accessible non-repayable grant to help cover basic needs or recovery costs.
